Kite Flying Test Field Report: Gegory Lake Zone 4, Nuwara Eliya, Central Province of Sri Lanka

Introduction:
As the President of the Ravana Aviation Kite Association, it is my pleasure to present this report on the kite flying test conducted at Gegory Lake Zone 4 in Nuwara Eliya, Central Province of Sri Lanka. Our aim is to highlight this location as one of the premier kite flying fields in the world and to raise public awareness about its unique features and benefits for kite enthusiasts.

Location Overview:
Gegory Lake Zone 4, located in the picturesque town of Nuwara Eliya, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and favorable climatic conditions. Nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya offers a unique blend of cool weather, lush greenery, and panoramic views, making it an ideal spot for kite flying.

Field Test Details:

Date: 25 July 2024

Time: 0900Hrs, 1200Hrs, 1800Hrs, and 2100Hrs

Weather Conditions:

  • 0900Hrs – Light to Moderate Steady Wind, Scattered Cloud Patches, Fair Weather
  • 1200Hrs – Moderate Steady Wind, Cloudy – 5/8 Okta, Fair Weather
  • 1800Hrs – Light to Moderate Wind, Scattered Cloud Patches, Fair Weather
  • 2100Hrs – Light to Moderate Wind, Clear Sky, Fair Weather

Participants:

  1. Capt. Harsha Govinda Koralearachchi – Kite Test Flyer & Field Examiner of Ravana Aviation Kite Association
  2. Mr. NMWP Nissanka – Kite Examiner and Kite Test Flying Assistant

Observations and Findings:

Wind Conditions:

  • Consistent and steady wind flow, averaging 8.7 km/h – 8.3 km/h. Light gusting wind in the evening.
  • Ideal wind speed for both novice and experienced kite flyers.
  • Minimal turbulence, providing a smooth and enjoyable kite flying experience.
  • Note: Occasionally, the kite may drift to the left before returning to its original direction.
  • Within Zone 4, there are many spots suitable for kite flying in various directions, showcasing the location’s versatility.

Terrain and Space:

  • Gegory Lake Zone 4 offers expansive open fields with ample space for launching and flying kites of various sizes.
  • The flat terrain and lack of obstacles ensure safe and uninterrupted kite flying sessions.
  • The scenic backdrop of the lake and surrounding hills adds to the aesthetic appeal of the kite flying experience.

Accessibility and Amenities:

  • Easily accessible by road, with ample parking facilities nearby.
  • Availability of basic amenities such as restrooms and seating areas for participants and spectators.
  • Proximity to local shops and cafes for refreshments and supplies.

Community Engagement:

  • Positive feedback from local residents and visitors who witnessed the kite flying test.
